Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz Shaheed is one of those ten great sons of this country, who in the line of duty and in defence of their country, showed extra ordinary bravery and courage and were awarded with the highest military award of the land, Nishan-e-Haider.
Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz s/o Meherban Khan, was born in 1944 in a small village Pind Malkan now renamed in his honour as Mahufazabad, district Rawalpindi, now in the vicinity of sprawling Islamabad city and actually within the limits of Islamabad Capital Territory. It is situated only 27 kms away from the Zero Point. One can easily reach there while turning towards Kahuta Road from the Islamabad Highway. The tomb is located at 33°35'38.19"N, 73°15'38.91"E.

15 پنجاب رجمنٹ (33 محمدی)
عظمت، جرات، بہادری اور سرفروشی کے 150 سال
15 پنجاب رجمنٹ کی بنیاد23 ستمبر 1850 کو الہ آباد کے مقام پر لیفٹیننٹ ای ایج لانگ مورنے رکھی انہیں اس پلٹن 26 سال تک کمانڈ کرنے کا شرف حاصل ہے۔ اس پلٹن کو 1861 میں 33 بنگال انفنٹری، 1903 میں 33 پنجابی، 1922 میں 3/16 پنجاب کے نام سے موسوم کیا گیا۔ 1947 سے 1956 تک 14 پیرابریگیڈ میں بطور پیرا بٹالین شامل ہونے کا اعزاز بھی حاصل ہوا۔اس عرصہ میں پلٹن کا ہر جوان چھاتہ بردار تھا۔ 1903 میں پلٹن کو اکثریت مسلمان سپاہ ہونے کی وجہ سے33 پنجابی ہونے کی وجہ سے33 پنجابی کی بجائے عام طور پر 33 محمدی کے نام سے پکارا جاتا تھا۔ سرکاری دستاویزات میں آج بھی ہم اپنے آپ کو 33 محمدی یعنی محمد صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے سپاہی کہلاتے تھے۔
پلٹن نے آج تک 29 جنگی اعزازات حاصل کیئے ہیں۔ معرکہ حق و باطل میں رن آف کچھ اور چھمب جوڑیاں 1965 اور واہگہ اٹاری پل کنجری 1971 کے محاذ پر پلٹن کے سپوتوں نے کارہائے نمایاں سر انجام دیئے۔ 1971 میں پل کنجری کے مقام پرقوم کے نامور سپوت لانس نائک محمد محفوظ شہید نے قربانی دےکرجان فروشی کی عظیم داستان رقم کی جس پر انہیں نشان حیدر سے نوازا گیا۔ علاوہ ازیں 33 محمدی کے بہادر سپوتوں نے آج تک 3 ستارہ جرات، 2 تمغہ جرات، 3 تمغہ بسالت اور 17 امتیازی اسناد بھی حاصل کی ہیں۔ 1923 سے 15 پنجاب اور پرنسس آف ویلزرائل رجمنٹ ایک دوسرے سے اعزازی طور پر منسلک ہیں۔ یہ باہمی تعلق خط و کتابت اور باہمی میل جول کے ذریعے آج تک قائم ہے۔ کھیلوں کے میدان میں 33 محمدی نے آرمی، قومی اور عالمی سطح پر نمائندگی کے علاوہ 1956 کے اولمپکس میں ملک کی نمائندگی کی۔ باکسنگ 33 محمدی کا ہمیشہ سے شاخسانہ رہا ہے۔ اس کھیل کے پچھلے 40 سال سے پلٹن ہمیشہ فاتح رہی ہے۔ آج بھی پلٹن کے کے باکسرز عالمی اور قومی سطح ہر ہمیشہ فتح کے سٹینڈ پر پہنچتے ہیں۔
15 Punjab Regiment (33 Muhammadi)
150 Years of Glory, Valour, Bravery and Fearlessness
15 Punjab Regiment was raised at Allahabad on 23 December, 1850, by Lieutenant E H Long Moore. He had had the honour of commanding this battalion for 26 years. This battalion was named 33 Bengal Infantry in 1861, 33 Punjabi in 1903 and 3/16 Punjabi in 1922. It has the honour of being part of 14 Para Brigade as a Para Battalion from 1947 to 1956. During this time every soldier of this battalion was a paratrooper. In 1933, due to the majority of soldiers being Muslims this battalion was commonly know as 33 Muhammadi. In official papers it is still called as 33 Muhammadi i.e Soldiers of Muhammad (PBUH).
So far the battalion has won 29 military awards. In the conflict of right and wrong, at the fronts of Rann of Kucch, Chhamb Jaurian 1965 and battle of Wagah-Attari (Pul Kanjri) 1971, the soldiers gave exemplary performance. In 1971, at Pul Kanjri, nation's great son Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz Shahhed by his sacrifice wrote an epic of story of bravery, on which he was awarded Nishan-e-Haider. In addition to that the brave sons of 33 Muhammadi have till date won 3 Sitara-e-Jurrat, 2 Tamgha-e-Jurrat, 3 Tamgha-e-Basalat and 17 Certificates of Distinction. 15th Punjab Regiment and Princess of Wales Royal Regiment and honorarily attached since 1923. This mutual relation is continuous till date through exchange of letters and visits. In the field of sports 33 Muhammadi, besides participating at army, national and international levels, represented the country in 1956 Olympics. Boxing had always been an integral part of 33 Muhammadi, battalion had remained champion for the last 40 years. Today too the boxer of the regiment always reach the victory stand in national and international contests.

لانس نائیک محمد محفوظ شہید - جرات، بہادری اور سرفروشی کی داستان
سوانح حیات:- محمد محفوظ گاوں پنڈ ملکاں،ضلع راولپنڈی میں 25 اکتوبر 1944 میں پیدا ہوئے۔ بچپن سے ہی بہت دلیر، باوقار اور خود اعتماد شخصیت کے مالک تھے۔ انہوں نے ابتدائی تعلیم اپنے گاوں کےپرائمری سکول سے حاصل کی۔ محمد محفوظ کو بچپن سے ہی تیراکی اور کبڈی کا شوق تھا اور کبڈی کے حوالے سے اردگرد کے علاقے میں پہچانے جاتے تھے۔ اپنے گاوں کی کبڈی ٹیم کے کپتان بھی رہ چکے تھے۔ آرمی میں آنے کا شوق ان کو اپنے دادا جان جناب گلزار خان کی کہانیوں سے ہوا۔ وہ دادا جان سے پہلی جنگ عظیم، دوسری جنگ عظیم اور مسلمان جرنیلوں کی کہانیاں سنا کرتے تھے اور ان ہی کہانیوں سے متاثر ہو کرانہوں نے 25 اکتوبر 1962 کو آرمی میں شمولیت اختیار کر لی اور 8 مئی 1963 کو 15 پنجاب رجمنٹ میں کوئٹہ کے مقام پر تعینات ہوئے۔
بہادری اور جانفروشی کی داستان:- نمبر 2222519 لانس نائیک محمد محفوظ الفا کمپنی کی پلاٹون نمبر 3 میں ایل ایم جی کے فائرر تھے۔ 1971 کی پاک بھارت جنگ میں 15 پنجاب (33 محمدی) 10 ڈویژن کا حصہ تھی اور لاہور / واہگہ کے محاذ پر تعینات تھی۔ 17 دسمبر کی رات 15 پنجاب کی ایک کمپنی کوپل کنجری گاوں پر حملہ کرنے کا حکم ملا جو دشمن کے علاقے میں تھا اور دشمن کی ایک کمپنی اس پر متعین تھی۔ وہاں پر دشمن نے دفاع کے لیئے نہایت مضبوط مورچہ بندی کر رکھی تھی۔ کچھ وجوہات کی بنا پر حملہ اپنے مقررہ وقت سے کچھ دیر بعد کیا گیا۔ اسی دوران روشنی پھیلنے کی وجہ سے دشمن ہماری کمپنی پر کارگر فائر کر رہا تھا۔ یہ ایسا مرحلہ تھا کہ ذرا برابر حرکت موت کا پیغام سنا رہی تھی۔لانس نائیک محمد محفوظ نے اس موقع پر بھی ہمت نہ ہاری اور دشمن کی جانب فائر جاری رکھا۔ اسی دوران دشمن کا ایک بم لانس نائیک محمد محفوظ کے قریب پھٹا اور بم کے کئی ٹکڑے ان کے جسم پر لگے۔ جس کی وجہ سے لانس نائیک محمد محفوظ کی مشین گن ناکارہ ہوگئی۔ لانس نائیک محمد محفوظ سے 3 گز کے فاصلے پراس کا ایک اور ساتھی جو ایل ایم جی کا فائرر تھا شہید ہوچکا تھا اور اس کی ایل ایم جی قریب ہی پڑی تھی۔ لانس نائیک محمد محفوظ رینگتا ہوا اس کی طرف بڑھا اور اس ایل ایم جی سے دشمن پر فائر کرنا شروع کردیا۔ اس دوران اس نے دیکھا کہ دشمن کی ایک مشین گن اپنے مورچے سے ہماری طرف تباہ کن اور موثر فائر کر رہی ہے۔ وہ اس مورچے کی طرف رینگتا ہوا بڑھا، مورچے سے تقریبا دس گز کے فاصلے پر نعرہ تکبیر بلند کرتے ہوئے اٹھ کر دشمن کے مورچے کی جانب بھاگا اور لانس نائیک محمد محفوظ نے دشمن کے اس فائرر کی جو کہ فائر کر رہا تھا گردن دبوچ لی۔ دشمن کے باقی دو سپاہیوں نے سنگینوں سے محفوظ پر حملہ کردیا۔ لیکن اس شیر دل جوان نے دشمن کو اس وقت تک نہ چھوڑا جب تک اس کو موت کی گھاٹ نہ اتار دیا اور لانس نائیک محمد محفوظ نے زخموں کی تاب نہ لاتے ہوئے جام شہادت نوش کیا اور شہید ہونے کے بعد بھی دشمن ان کے ہاتھ اپنے ساتھی کی گردن سے بڑی مشکل سے ہٹا سکے۔ اس تمام معرکے میں دشمن کی 3 سکھ لائیٹ انفینٹری کے کمانڈنگ آفیسر لیفٹیننٹ کرنل پوری جو کہ اگلے مورچے میں تھا اور محفوظ کی تمام بہادری کی کارروائی دیکھ چکا تھا۔ فائر بندی کے بعد جب شہداء کی لاشیں اٹھائی جا رہی تھیں تو دشمن لانس نائیک کی لاش خود اٹھا کر لائے اور کمانڈنگ آفیسرنےمحفوظ کی بہادری کا اعتراف ان الفاظ میں کیا:
میں اپنی تمام سروس کے دوران اتنا بہادر جوان کبھی نہیں دیکھا، اگر یہ انڈین آرمی کا جوان ہوتا تو آج میں اس بہادر جوان کو انڈین آرمی کے سب سے اعلی فوجی اعزاز کے لیئے پیش کرتا.
اور یوں23 مارچ 1972 کو حکومت پاکستان کی جانب سے لانس نائیک محمد محفوظ کو بعد از شہادت سب سے اعلی جنگی اعزاز نشان حیدر سے نوازا گیا۔ 15 پنجاب رجمنٹ کے مندرجہ ذیل آفیسرز نے 18 دسمبر 2008 کو یوم محفوظ کے موقع پر یہ خراج عقیدت پیش کیا۔

Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz Shaheed - A Tale of Valour, Bravery & Fearlessness
Biography:- Muhammad Mahfuz was born in Pind Malkan, district Rawalpindi on 25 October, 1944. He had a very brave, dignified and confident personality. He got his early education from the primary school of his village. Muhammad Mahfuz was fond of swimming and kabaddi since his childhood and was known in the surrounding due to Kabaddi. He remained the captain of the Kabaddi team of his village. He became interested in joining army due to the stories of his grand father Gulzar Khan. He listened to stories told by his grandfather about the WWI, WWII and of Muslim generals and being impressed by these stories he joined army on 25 October, 1962 and was appointed in 15 Punjab Regiment on 8 May, 1963 at Quetta.
A Tale of Bravery & Self Sacrifice:- Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz No. 2222519, was LMG operator in the platoon no. 3 of the Alpha Company. During the Indo-Pak war of 1971, 15 Punjab (33 Muhammadi) was part of 10 Division and was deployed at Lahore / Wahgah front. On the night of 17 December, a company of 15 Punjab was ordered to attack the village of Pul Kanjari, which was in the enemy area and a company of enemy was deployed there. The enemy has strongly fortified this place for its defence. Due to some reasons the attack was launched a little later than the decided time. In the meanwhile due to light the enemy was firing effectively at our company. It was such a situation that a little movement meant instant death. Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz did not lose courage at this moment and continued his fire against the enemy. In the meanwhile a shell of the enemy exploded near Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz, many shrapnels hit his body and his machine gun also was knocked out. At a distance of 3 yards a comrade of Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz, who too was a machine gun operator laid martyred and his machine gun was lying nearby. Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz crawled towards it and started firing on the enemy with this LMG. During this he saw that from the trenches of the enemy a machine gun is terribly and effectively firing towards us. He crawled towards this pillbox, from a distance of about 10 yards، he rose with a slogan of Allahu Akbar and ran towards the position of the enemy and Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz took hold of the machine gun operator from his neck. Two other enemy soldiers attacked Mahfuz with bayonets. But this lion heart soldier did not let the enemy go until he killed him. Due to injuries Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz embraced martyrdom and even after his martyrdom the enemy could release the neck of their companion with difficulty. During all this battle the commanding officer of 3 Sikh Light Infantry, colonel Puri who was present in the forward trenches and had seen all the brave action of Mahfuz. After the ceasefire, when the bodies of the martyrs were being retrieved, the enemy himself brought the body of Lance Naik and the commanding officer admitted (praised) the bravery of Mahfuz in the following words:
"During my entire service I have never seen a soldier more brave, had he been a soldier of Indian Army, I would have recommended him for the highest military award."
Hence, on 23 March, 1972, Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz was rewarded with the highest military award Nishan-e-Haider by the government of Pakistan, post martyrdom. The following officers of the 15 Punjab regiment paid their respects on Mahfuz Day on 18 December, 2008.

My friend and colleague in Al Kass Sports Channel, Sherjeel Masoom straightened the tilted picture of the plaque.
I reached there on one sunny afternoon. The whole areas is very beautiful and even a long drought and dusty atmosphere could not suppress the natural beauty completely. While taking pictures of the tomb a man with pleasant demeanour approached me and introduced himself to be the nephew of Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz Shaheed. His friend and neighbour Muhammad Safeer was also with him.
He informed me that Muhammad Mahfuz was not married. Though he was engaged. He also informed me that Mahfuz had two other brothers and both we re alive. He is son of Sakhawat Hussain, the younger brother of Mahfuz Shaheed. They warmly invited me to have a cup of tea with them, which due to shortage of time I could not accept. Their house is close to the tomb of Mahfuz Shaheed and they also told me that government gave them 75 acres of agricultural land in recognition of his service to the nation. They also invited me to attend a special ceremony to be held after two days on his martyrdom day on 17 December. They were expecting senior military officers to come to lay wreaths on his tomb and offer fateha. But unfortunately I could not go there again. Muhammad Mahfuz Shaheed is one of those people who love their country and in the time of need does not shirk from their duties towards it. And are always ready to give any sacrifice for its security and well being. This great soldier's tomb is very close to Islamabad. One should take his or her children to inspire them and create feelings of patriotism in the younger generation. Schools can arrange a trip to the tombs and monuments of these heroes.
