A Hindu Temple In Hafizabad, Pakistan.

As often happens, while searching for Gurdwrara Chhevin Patshahi in Hafizabad, I made an unintended discovery of something else, an old Hindu Temple. We stopped in the main bazaar and asked about the location of the gurdwara. One of them was Chacha Aslam, a man well above eighty, but still hale and hearty. He gave us some information about the gurdwara but before that invited us to visit an old Hindu temple, just close by. He led us through the narrowest bazaar that I have ever seen. The alley was certainly less than two meters wide, with shops on both sides. After covering a distance of nearly a hundred meters, we entered a small passage on the left side and entered a small open place between two or three houses.

Chacha Aslam knocked at the door and Mr Mehmood Sulaiman opened the door. When we told him our purpose of the visit he allowed us to enter. His family lives in the same complex, which has several rooms. In order to cause them minimum disturbance, we went upstairs on the first floor. It has a big hall. With wooden galleries and beautiful pillars.

It was a chance discovery. We were lucky to meet Mr Mehmood Sulaiman, the current owner of this place. He is a professor in the Government College, Hafizabad, and teaches Islamic Studies. He graciously allowed us, the complete strangers, to enter his house and take pictures. His father Mr Muhmmad Sulaiman and his family themselves migrated from Jhabal, district Amritsar. (I found two places, Jhabal Mannan and Chabal Kalan, south of Amritsar.)

I am also very thankful to Chacha Aslam, who not only took great interest in our original inquiry about the gurdwara but also informed us about the existence of this temple. He also accompanied us, to the house of Mr Mehmood and stayed with us all the time. He himself migrated from Massanian area, near Batala, in 1947.

I could not find any details about the temple, its importance or history of construction. However, Mehmood sahib informed me that some zealots attacked it in the aftermath of the destruction of Babri Masjid in 1992. The damage done to the spire can still be seen. However, luckily the building survived with a limited damage.

An Old Gurdwara In Sargodha, Pakistan.

Sargodha is a big and important city in north-central Punjab. It is a new city, its foundations were laid down in 1903 during the British Raj. According to a booklet "The Sargodha Perspective", published by the Commissioner of Sargodha Division in 1975, this is how it got its name:

The district of Sargodha derives its name from the headquarters town of Sargodha which is a combination of "SAR" is a Hindu word denoting a water pond while "Godha" was the name of a Hindu faqir who lived near that pond. With the introduction of canal system, the whole settlement grew around the pond and came to be called as Sargodha. The pond was later one filled up where now stands the District Headquarters Hospital, Sargodha.
Like Faisalabad, it was established in connection with the development of Canal Colonies, in the result of vast irrigation projects initiated by the British in Punjab in the 1860s and later on. The British developed it as an administrative and commercial centre. Due to its strategic location, they also built an airport here. Which later on, developed into the most important base of PAF. Even, till after the creation of Pakistan, the district in which Sargodha city is located was known as Shahpur. Named after a town 30 kilometers northwest to Sargodha. Despite being a new city the origins of its name are not clear.

It is natural that historic buildings or monuments are not expected to be found in a newly built city. However, many old houses and at least one temple and a gurdwara can be seen, which give us a glimpse of a time, that has long passed away. This same gurdwara is the topic of my present post.

It is located in the main bazaar of Sargodha. I saw it dozens of time from outside since my childhood. Despite a very busy and chaotic surroundings its beautiful facade and two minarets always attracted my attention. Only much later I realized that it was a gurdwara, which has been housing Muslim High School, Ambala, since 1947.

I first entered in this gurdwara, now a government school, about three years ago on 29 March 2014. My next visit was on 21 December 2016, the result of which I am sharing with you. It is situated on a very busy and overcrowded street. But as soon as you enter the vast building through its big gate, you find a vast courtyard and a double storey building with many rooms and a big hall. A little I could find about the history of the gurdwara. Though there was a treasure trove of information all around us in the shape of dozens of plaques in the building. But there was a problem. All of them were written in Gurmukhi, a script used by Sikhs to write Punjabi. So for almost 70 decades there they were, unread. But fortunately during such a long time apparently nobody attempted to remove them, but most probably consciously saved them from damage during the repairs of the building. That's why most of them are quite illegible even after such a long time. I took pictures of all the plaques to read them later on. The gurdwara is located at  32° 5'13.78"N,  72°39'53.40"E.

These plaques, written in Gurmukhi, gave impetus to my old intentions to learn Gurmukhi. Which I finally did in February and March his year. Now just by reading these plaques, we can find a lot not only about the history of this gurdwara but also the society of pre-partition era, especially the Sikhs. Here, I have given the demographics figures of Sargodha, according to the census of 1941, to give an idea of the composition of a multi-religious society of Sargodha, before the partition.

I tried to find details of this Gurdwara, which must be one of the biggest buildings in pre-partition Sargodha. But could not find any information. It is probably because of the reason that it is not associated with any of the ten Sikh Gurus. Otherwise, any such association would have given it more importance in the eyes of Sikhs.

However, with the help of dozens of plaques fixed in a veranda and on its pillars a fair assessment can be made about its history and development.

Plaque 01
W. M Hailey ESOH
1-9-1904

This plaque at the main entrance shows that the foundation of this Gurdwara was laid in 1904. That means that it must have been one of the first important buildings in Sargodha. ESOH (not certain about the details) must have been the designation of Mr Hailey. I think that under the master plan of the city, this place was reserved for a gurdwara and an adjoining piece of land was reserved for a temple. At a short distance, a more prominent place in a big roundabout was allotted for a mosque. I  can imagine a scene of perfect religious harmony.

In the courtyard, a beautiful marble structure exists. Which used to hold a flagpole. Now the flag of Sikh faith, called Nishan Sahib, is no longer hoisted, but the large flagpole still exists. On this beautiful structure, big plaques are fixed, which inform the names of the people who made donations for the construction of this gurdwara. Sikh Holy Prayers are also inscribed.

Though I have transliterated the Gurmukhi text in Urdu, including the prayers, I have not translated the prayers into English. Because it is difficult to understand them and hence greater chances of making mistakes. And I consciously decided not to venture into something that could offend religious sentiments of someone.

Rs 125, Beloved of Guru Brother Eshar Singh, Brother Arjan Singh Ji of Block No. 2, in memory of Brother Raj Singh, Bibi Harbans Kaur and Brother Naranjan Singh, for this gurdwara _______

These plaques, provide invaluable information about the Sikh community of pre-partition era in this region. Their devotion to their religion and the strong sense of commitment to their community is evident. These also tell about the love for their family members, occupation and social condition of the donors. The pieces of information which I personally found to be interesting are the following:

  1. Plaque 01: It shows that the foundation of the gurdwara was laid on September 1, 1904. So it must be one of the earliest buildings of the city.
  2. Plaque 02: The family of Baba Soheila Sign and Baba Jodha Singh, made the biggest donation of Rs 1,500/- for the construction of this gurdwara. That was a very big amount in those days. Unfortunately, no date is given.
  3. Plaque 09: Bhai Jeet Singh made a contribution of Rs 125 in memory of his departed father. He belonged to a small town Nali. My father in law also belongs to this town. And I often get an opportunity to visit this old town, also famous for the shrine of a saint, Baba Bundi Sahib. Who died in 1933 and was popular among Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus alike, for his saintly ways.
  4. Plaque 36: This plaque gives two important pieces of information. First, the donation was made on September 11, 1933, for the electrification of the gurdwara. Being the most important building of the Sikh community, we can safely assume that electricity was provided to Sargodha in 1933 or just before it. Second, this service was made in the memory of a pilot in IAF Sardar Bhupinder Singh. We all now that Sargodha is known as a city of eagles. So it means that tradition goes back to pre-independence days.
At the end, I would like to thank Sardar Mahinder Pratap Singh Ji of Dhariwal, district Gurdaspur. He is also working and residing in Qatar. He was very helpful in reading these plaques. Without his help, most probably I would have made many mistakes.

I with Sardar Mahinder Pratap Singh
For me personally, it was a new experience. While reading the plaques I found the names of a generation, long passed away. And in a way hidden from the people for seven decades, despite being in front of thousands of people all that time. But perhaps this monument will disappear soon, as the building is need of a major repair. In an ideal situation, I would wish it to be turned into a museum of our culture and heritage, after shifting the school to a new and bigger building.
