In mid July, 2014,
news items appeared in the media that the PM Nawaz Sharif has ordered the house
of legendary actor Dilip Kumar, to be declared a national heritage and also to
take steps to restore it and turn it into a museum. Notification for that
purpose was issued on 26th July, 2014. I noticed, that the related news items in different newspapers or
websites mentioned only about half a dozen actors, who had roots in present day
Pakistan. I knew that the number is definitely much higher. So, I decided to do
a little research of my own on this topic, which is not only historically
interesting but culturally also very important. The result of this research was astounding.
When I started writing it, I had a figure of 40 in my mind, but by the time I
finished it, I found 175 Bollywood actors, actresses, producers and directors,
who were born in present day Pakistan or have family roots in this region.
Indian film industry based in Mumbai, which was called Bombay until
1995, is called Bollywood. Bollywood's importance can be gauged from the fact
that it is often referred to as the face of India. Its movies have always
remained popular in Pakistan. And except for a short period of a few years at
the turn of the 21st century, there have been no hostile movies
against Pakistan. That Pakistan bashing movies, are even embarrassing to many
mature Indians as well. I personally feel that the blame does not lie entirely
on Indians.
But I don't want to digress any further and come back to my topic of
this post. In this post I have mentioned those film personalities who were born
in those areas of India, which are now, part of Pakistan or their children who
worked and earned fame for themselves in the Bollywood. When I started writing
this post, another question that arose in my mind was that in which order I
should arrange their names. The safest solution I found was to write their
names according to their dates of birth.
Here I would feel it pertinent to mention that I
am not a big movie fan or an expert on Indian cinema. That’s why I have
confined myself mostly to facts only. I am writing this post, just because of my interest in history and as a
student of history I consider that the art is an integral part of history. I
also want to clarify that exact locations are difficult to find in most of the
cases. At least not know to me, so I shall appreciate if anyone can provide more
exact locations of their birthplace or residence. Here I would write just a brief introduction
to the lives of these artists and their roots in Pakistan. You must be thinking
that what the source of information is. Actually I took all information from
different websites, like Wikipedia, IMDb, newspapers articles, blogs etc.
A picture is said to be worth thousands of
words, but this one is sure worth millions.
