I was active in the area around Pakpattan on the 4th of October, 2025. Besides some other places, visiting the tomb of our national hero, Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed, the third recipient of the highest military award of Pakistan, Nishan-e-Haider, was on the top of the list. However, time was short, and I had many more miles to go. A bigger concern was the fast-fading daylight. However, I managed to reach there in time to pay my homage to this great soldier and take some pictures.
This tomb is a simple but elegant structure in a cemetery outside the village Chak No. 253/EB, now known as Tufailabad in honour of this great hero of this land. The tomb is located on the road leading to the Chak from the main Gaggo Mandi–Burewala road at 30°11'57.45"N, 72°47'35.29"E.
Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed, Nishan-e-Haider, was born in the village Kharkhan (ਖੜਕਾਂ, کھڑکاں) in the district of Hoshiarpur. However, I could not locate this village with certainty. Google Earth and some other maps show its location at 31°30'48.96"N, 76°03'23.98"E, but no settlement is found at this exact point in the hilly area. The village may correspond to one of the two small settlements located nearly a kilometer southwest of this spot.

About half a kilometer to the north, at the turn of the Gaggo Mandi–Burewala Road, a gate has been built as a memorial to Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed. A plaque is fixed on the gate, describing his career and the battle of Lakshmipur.

گوجر قوم یا یہ عظیم سپوت 22 جولائی 1914 کو ضلع جالندھر میں پیدا ہوا۔ آپ کا آبائی ضلع ہوشیار پور تھا۔ ابتدائی تعلیم (شام چوراسی) اور ایف-اے گورنمنٹ کالج جالندھر سے پاس کیا۔ ملازمت کے لیے نظرِ انتخاب سپہ گری ٹھہرا۔ 1932 میں فوجی ملازمت کا آغاز کیا۔ 1942 میں انڈین ملٹری اکیڈمی ڈیرہ دون سے کمیشن حاصل کیا۔
قیام پاکستان کے بعد آپ کی تعیناتی کا اعزاز13 پنجاب رجمنٹ کو حاصل ہوا۔ فرض کی لگن اور قابلیت کے بل بوتے پرجلدہ ہی میجر کے عہدے پر فائز ہوئے۔ 1956 میں آپ ایسٹ پاکستان رائفلز سے منسلک ہوئے اور آپ کو لکشمی پور (ضلع کومیلا) کو غاصب دشمن سے آزاد کرانے کا عظیم فرض سونپا گیا۔ کامیابی نے آپ کے قدم چومے ۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔ فرض کی ادائیگی کے دوران آپ نے جان کی بازی لگا کر شجاعت کی وہ داستان رقم کی جس کے لیے شہہ ر گ کے خون کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے۔ آپ نے لکشمی پور پر پاکستان کا سبز ہلالی پرچم لہرا کر اپنا فرض ادا کردیا۔
7 اگست 1958 بروز جمعرات اس عظیم مجاہد نے مقامِ اعزاز حاصل کیا اور حکومت پاکستان نے "نشان حیدر" سے نوازا۔
اسے منزل پر پہنچانا تھا اور خود لوٹ آنا تھا اگرچہ کام مشکل تھا مگر کرنا پڑا مجھ کو
اس گیٹ کی تعمیر حلقہ کے رکن قومی اسمبلی جناب چوہدری قربان علی چوہان اور طفیل شہید ویلفیئر سوسائٹی کی شب و روز کاوشوں کی مرہون منت ہے۔

The Victor of Lakshmipur
The history of a nation’s freedom, survival, and security is always written with the blood of its martyrs. The crimson glow on the cheeks of the homeland reflects the pure blood of these heroes. One such brave soldier, who wrote an everlasting tale of unmatched courage, perseverance, and sacrifice for this sacred land, was
Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed (Nishan-e-Haider).
Belonging to the Gujjar community, this noble son of the soil was born on 22 July 1914 in District Jalandhar, while his ancestral district was Hoshiarpur. He received his early education in Sham Chaurasi and passed his F.A. from Government College, Jalandhar. Drawn by the spirit of service, he chose a military career and joined the army in 1932. In 1942, he was commissioned from the Indian Military Academy, Dehra Dun.
After the creation of Pakistan, he was posted to the 13th Punjab Regiment. Through dedication and ability, he soon rose to the rank of Major. In 1956, he was attached to the East Pakistan Rifles, and was entrusted with the great task of liberating Lakshmipur (District Comilla) from enemy occupation. Success followed his steps. During the discharge of his duty, he displayed extraordinary bravery and wrote, with his own blood, a story of courage that demanded the sacrifice of one’s lifeblood. After raising Pakistan’s green crescent flag over Lakshmipur, he fulfilled his duty with honour.
On 7 August 1958 (Thursday), this great warrior attained the highest station of martyrdom, and the Government of Pakistan conferred upon him the nation’s supreme military honour, the “Nishan-e-Haider.”
“It was my duty to deliver it to its destination and then return;
Though the task was difficult, I had to accomplish it.”
The construction of this gate is the result of the tireless efforts of Mr. Chaudhry Qurban Ali Chauhan, Member of the National Assembly, and the Tufail Shaheed Welfare Society.

So far, eleven brave soldiers of the Pakistan Army have been honoured with the Nishan-e-Haider for showing the highest degree of dedication to their duty and displaying exceptional courage on the battlefield. Before this visit, I had already paid homage to four Nishan-e-Haider recipients by visiting their tombs or monuments. You can find the articles on the page titled “Military Heroes.”
