185. Sri Guru Nanak High School, Mitha Tiwana, Khushab! (Govt. Higher Secondary School, Mitha Tiwana)

Deep in rural western Punjab, in the district of Khushab, lies a town called Mitha Tiwana. Once, it was the stronghold of a small state ruled by the Tiwana clan,  a clan that played a considerable role in the history of Punjab during the last two centuries. But that is not the subject of this article.

I visited this town because of a school, a school that holds many memories. Not only the memories of the thousands of children who have studied there, but also of those who built it with great love and care. They contributed to its establishment with their own money, thus showing the importance they attached to education and knowledge. They built a beacon of light that is still spreading the light of learning after the passage of more than a century. The school is located at:  32°14'24.50"N,  72° 6'55.08"E.

Yes, it was an unusually long century, for it brought such profound changes that not only the community that built the school has vanished from this part of the world, but even the very language in which they inscribed their names and sentiments has today become alien to this land. That was my purpose. to bring those lost memories back to life.

The school library impressed me with both the quantity and the quality of its collection. A well-maintained and neatly organized library was indeed a pleasant surprise.

تاریخ گورنمنٹ ہائر سیکنڈری سکول 

یہ مدرسہ 1865 میں پرائمری سکول سے شروع ہوا اور پھر 1915 میں اسے مڈل سکول کا درجہ دے دیا گیا۔ 1943 میں یہ ڈسٹرکٹ بورڈ ہائی سکول بنا۔ 1947 میں یہ گورنمنٹ ہائی سکول بن گیا۔ تقسیم ملک سے پہلے یہ سکول اپنی سابقہ عمارت میں تھا۔ جو اب گرلز ہائی سکول بنا دیا گیا ہے اور یہ سکول گورونانک ہائی سکول کی عمارت میں آگیا اور اب تک اسی عمارت میں کام کر رہا ہے۔ 1989 میں اسے ہائر سیکنڈری کا درجہ دے دیا گیا۔ 1992 کے لیے ایف۔ اے کی پہلی جماعت تیار ہوئی۔ ہائر سیکنڈری کلاسوں کے لیے نئی شاندار عمارت بن گئی ہے۔ اب یہ کلاسیں اسی عمارت میں ہی پڑھ رہی ہیں۔

History of Government Higher Secondary School

This school began as a primary school in 1865 and was later upgraded to a middle school in 1915. In 1943, it became a District Board High School. In 1947, it was converted into a Government High School. Before the partition of the country, the school was housed in its original building, which has since been converted into a Girls’ High School. The boys’ school was then shifted to the building of the Guru Nanak High School, where it continues to operate to this day.

In 1989, the school was upgraded to a Higher Secondary School. The first class for F.A. (Intermediate) was prepared in 1992. A new, magnificent building has been constructed for the Higher Secondary classes, and these classes are now conducted in that building.

The school staff, especially the Principal Sahib, were very cooperative and received us warmly when they came to know the purpose of our visit. The Principal himself took us on a tour of the building and helped us locate all the plaques. The good condition and cleanliness deserve full praise. The Principal Sahib, whenever we said something good about the school, attributed the credit to the hard work and dedication of his staff. His graceful and humble personality impressed us. I am indeed very thankful to all the staff for their cooperation and help.

Unfortunately, the record of headmasters before 1947 could not be found in such a short time. But I try to find it and in case of any success, shall share it with my readers. 

The biggest attraction for me was the over two dozen commemorative plaques that still adorn the walls of the school. These plaques are a treasure trove of information, shedding light not only on the history of the school but also on the people who participated with great devotion in its construction. Some of them remain in very good condition despite the passage of a tumultuous century, while most of the others are still quite legible. What is even more surprising is that the writing on them is completely unfamiliar to the local people, with all cultural links long severed, and, to be frank, with many bitter feelings lingering from the past, and, unfortunately, even the present. Despite all this, it is remarkable that the people around these plaques are consciously taking care of them. This is truly commendable.

Before my visit, I was aware of the existence of just one plaque. But to my delight, I found 28 plaques in Gurmukhi, the script in which the Sikhs write the Punjabi language. I have transliterated them into the Urdu alphabet and have also given an English translation for the convenience of my readers. 

The earliest plaques date back to 1920. This clearly indicates that the primary school, which was first established in 1865 and later upgraded to a middle school, underwent significant improvements and further development around that time.

Memorial Hall Sardar Bagh Singh ji

This hall was constructed by Sardar Harbel Singh and Sardar Sajjan Singh ji in memory of their father Sardar Bagh Singh.

Remarks: The picture of this hall can be seen above. Sardar Harbel Singh was the father of Lady Sobha Singh, wife of Sardar Sobha Singh, father of the famous writer Khushwant Singh. Sajjan Singh's daughter Bhrawan Bai, was the mother of famous actress of 1950s & 1960s, Achala Sachdev.

Remarks:I have visited around forty gurdwaras and schools built by the Sikh community and have seen hundreds of plaques, but I have never seen such a large amount donated by anyone. Sardar Sujan Singh belonged to Hadali, and this family produced many prominent personalities who gained fame and wealth in business, land development, construction, social work, and politics. Sardar Sobha Singh was the famous contractor involved in the construction of New Delhi and built many landmarks in the new capital. Khushwant Singh, a world-renowned writer, was the son of Sardar Sobha Singh. Sardar Ujjal Singh, Sobha Singh's brother, was a member of the Punjab Assembly and later served as the Governor of Punjab and Tamil Nadu.

Remarks: This plaque provides very important information. It tells us that a gurdwara was also constructed within the premises of the school. Now the gurdwara, if it was ever completed, no longer exists. However, a new block of two rooms stands at that location, as shown in the picture below.

It also informs us that the foundation stone was laid by Sant Nischal Singh ji, a prominent religious figure of that time.

The building where the gurdwara existed or was planned to be constructed.

I missed taking pictures of the above building. But when I read the plaque about the gurdwara, I requested Mr Shaukat Hayat, a teachet in the school, and he sent me these pictures.
