033. Bollywood's Pakistan Connection

In mid July, 2014, news items appeared in the media that PM Nawaz Sharif has ordered the house of legendary actor Dilip Kumar, to be declared a national heritage and also to take steps to restore it and turn it into a museum. Notification for that purpose was issued on 26th July, 2014. I noticed, that the related news items in different newspapers or websites mentioned only about half a dozen actors, who had roots in present day Pakistan. I knew that the number is definitely much higher. So, I decided to do a little research of my own on this topic, which is not only historically interesting but culturally also very important.  The result of this research was astounding. When I started writing it, I had a figure of 40 in my mind, but by the time I finished it, I found above 180 Bollywood actors, actresses, producers and directors, who were born in present day Pakistan or have family roots in this region.

Indian film industry based in Mumbai, which was called Bombay until 1995, is called Bollywood. Bollywood's importance can be gauged from the fact that it is often referred to as the face of India. Its movies have always remained popular in Pakistan. For a long time Indian movies focused on entertainment and social issues. Pakistan was not mentioned in a hostile way or portrayed negatively. Films consciously tried to create harmony and peace among different communities within India and also with its neighbours. That situation has changed since the turn of the 21st century. Anyway, that is altogether a different and complicated topic.

But I don't want to digress any further and come back to my topic of this post. In this post, I have mentioned those film personalities who were born in those areas of India, which are now, part of Pakistan or their children who worked and earned fame for themselves in Bollywood. When I started writing this post, another question that arose in my mind was that in which order I should arrange their names. The safest solution I found was to write their names according to their dates of birth.

Here I would feel it pertinent to mention that I am not a big movie fan or an expert on Indian cinema. That’s why I have confined myself mostly to facts only. I am writing this post, just because of my interest in history and as a student of history, I consider that art is an integral part of history. I also want to clarify that exact locations are difficult to find in most cases. At least not know to me, so I shall appreciate if anyone can provide more exact locations of their birthplace or residence.  Here I would write just a brief introduction to the lives of these artists and their roots in Pakistan. You must be thinking that what the source of information is. Actually, I took all the information from different websites, like Wikipedia, IMDb, newspaper articles, blogs etc.

A picture is said to be worth thousands of words, but this one is sure worth millions.

The townspeople received me very warmly. Many elders remembered my family and also the exact house where we lived. I was told that a mosque had been built in the courtyard of our old house and therefore they were not sure if I would like to go there. I said to them, "I would be very pleased to go there if you have no objection. Now I know the secret of my success. If people are praying five times a day in the courtyard of my house then obviously their blessings help me
become so successful. This pleased everybody and we quickly went on to see the old house."

I hope you would have found the above post interesting and even surprising. But by no means it is complete. I am sure that there must be many other artists in Bollywood, with roots in present-day Pakistan, which I could not find. I shall welcome any additional names and information related to this topic. Your comments are also most welcome. However, I request you keep them confined to this topic.

Note: When I started compiling this list in 2014 I never expected it to cross the number of 100, but today on 24 August 2023, the number has reached 213. That is not a small wonder and probably will increase further.
