200. A forgotten baoli at Baoli Khurd, district Gujrat!

While travelling on the historic GT Road on November 10, 2025, I visited three baolis, and one more the next day. This is the second one; I hope you have already read about the first baoli near Khukha in the district of Jhelum. This article is about an obscure baoli located at 32°53'12.00"N, 73°47'25.04"E, a couple of kilometres east of Sarai Alamgir and less than a kilometre north of the GT Road. Interestingly, the nearby village is also called Baoli Khurd.

An off-road dirt track leads to the baoli. We found just a big well there, with no traces of the stairs and other structures normally associated with a baoli. This raised some doubt in my mind about whether it was indeed a baoli or just an old, large well. I was taking some pictures and looking around when an old gentleman passed by on a motorcycle. I asked him about the well, and he confirmed that it is indeed a baoli and that the major portion of the structure is buried under the dirt.

The well is covered with grass, but is in good condition. (10.11.2025.)

The well is situated beside a road and is easily accessible. (10.11.2025.)

The well is still full of water and in use. (10.11.2025.)

Shrine of Baoli Sharif.

As noted above, the main structure of the baoli, the stairs and other elements, is buried underground. However, I believe that with some excavation, it can be easily unearthed and restored. Most probably, the buried structure would still be in good condition. I saw the preservation work on the baoli at Khukha and hope that the government will soon pay some attention to this baoli as well.
